In recent years, a variety of initiatives have been launched across the globe aimed at confronting the urgent challenge of climate change, mitigating various environmental issues, and promoting the development of green cities. These efforts are intertwined with the complex dynamics of urban economies, natural ecosystems, and transportation networks, all of which play crucial roles in fostering sustainable urban living. As we navigate through the 21st century, the rapid evolution of information and communication technologies has significantly impacted our ability to address these challenges. Ubiquitous computing—a term that denotes the integration of digital technology into everyday life—has emerged as a critical tool for urban planners, environmentalists, and policy-makers alike. Mastery of ubiquitous computing skills is becoming increasingly essential for the successful implementation of smart city concepts that aim to enhance quality of life while minimizing ecological footprints. In this paper, we conduct an in-depth investigation into the smart city paradigm and its potential as a viable solution to global environmental dilemmas. We will examine specific case studies that demonstrate how smart city design can transform urban landscapes into sustainable systems that prioritize environmental health. Furthermore, we will elaborate on actionable plans for constructing green cities: inclusive, high-efficiency urban spaces that effectively utilize resources, reduce waste, and promote renewable energy. Additionally, we will present a detailed overview of the convergence technologies—such as the Internet of Things (IoT), big data analytics, and artificial intelligence—that are imperative for realizing these ambitious objectives. By leveraging these innovative technologies, we can create interconnected urban environments that not only respond to the needs of their residents but also actively contribute to the preservation and enhancement of the natural world. Ultimately, this exploration aims to offer a comprehensive understanding of how integrated technological solutions can support our efforts toward building sustainable, resilient urban communities in harmony with the planet.
