Abstract:

The study assessed students’ perception of teachers’ pedagogical skills and its influence on interest in science in Owerri, Imo state, Nigeria. The study was guided by two (2) research questions and one (1) null hypothesis. It adopted an ex-post facto research design. The population of the study comprised 4,199 science students’ in senior secondary two (SS2), schools in Owerri education zone 1 of Imo state. A sample of 400 science students was drawn from the population using Taro Yamane (1967) guide for sample size with 95% confidence level. Two researcher developed instruments were used for data collection namely Students’ Perception of Teachers’ Pedagogical Skill Questionnaire (SPTPSQ) and Student Interest in Science Inventory (SIISI). The instruments were face validated using three experts from science education. Using Cronbach Alpha, internal consistency reliability indices of the two instruments were established as 0.909 and 0.857 for SPTPSQ and SIISI respectively. Percentages, mean and standard deviation were used to provide answers to the research questions while analysis of variance (ANOVA) was used to test the null hypothesis at 0.05 level of significance. The result of the study revealed that students perceived that science teachers have low pedagogical skills. Also, students’ perception of the teachers’ pedagogical skills has significant (p < .05) influence on interest in science. Based on these findings, the researchers recommended amongst others that: science teachers should endeavour to acquire knowledge of students’ perception about their teaching skill and plan their teaching to enhance their interest in science.
