Abstract:

Background/Objective: Aggressive behavior has been regarded as one of the most troublesome behavioral problems among adolescent students. This study aimed at ascertaining the association between violent video games play and aggressive behavior among adolescent students in the Southeast region of Nigeria. We also examined the moderating effects of gender and parental mediation in the association between violent video games play and aggressive behavior among adolescent students.
Materials and Method: The study participants were 603 senior class two adolescents. Data were collected using the Violent Video Games Questionnaire (VVGQ) and the Aggression Questionnaire (AQ).
Results: The results of our study showed that a significant positive relationship existed between self-reported violent video games play and aggressive behavior among the adolescent participants. Further, the results showed that gender significantly moderated the relationship between violent video games play and aggressive behavior among adolescents, whereas there was no connection with parental mediation.
Conclusion: The present study revealed that there is a significantly positive relationship between self-reported exposure to violent video games play and aggressive behavior among adolescent students. Violent video games play significantly predicted aggressive behavior in adolescent students. More studies are needed to further ascertain the predictive capacity of violent video games play over aggressive behavior in adolescent students in Nigeria.
