Abstract:

This article examined the need to utilize Blackboard technology in teaching and learning of special education courses in higher education institutions. The main objective of the study was to promote the use of blackboard technology in the teaching and learning of special education courses in higher education institutions in Nigeria. Blackboard technology is an educational learning management system created with third-generation technology in order to handle courses and educational contents by bringing together face-to-face and online teaching-learning benefits. Blackboard technology can play significant roles in availing easy access to teaching and learning of special education courses, restoring of learners’ independence, integrating learners to share common ideas and engaging special educators and students in synergic learning. The Blackboard technology is a motivational and participatory approach to learning and could be used to supplement traditional face-to-face instructions given to special education students in higher education institutions. The application of Blackboard technology in teaching and learning of special education is suggested to Nigerian higher educational institutions that have not embraced the use of Blackboard technology in teaching and learning of educational courses. Finally, further studies are required to determine the roles of Blackboard technology in developing effective study skills among special education students.
