Abstract:

This paper prese nts an alternative method of transferring vide o and audio using SMS (Short Message Service) over GSM network without de pendencies of GPRS, EDGE and high data rate IP Technologies. Generally SMS is a text based service which is limited up to 140 byte s (standard 8 bits byte) or 160 characters (GSM 7 bit character set). It has national and international roaming and widely supported by other technologies as well. For testing the propose d methodology, an application is devel oped using J2ME platform w hich can be used in emergency cases in regions where there is no facility for multime dia me ssaging. Furtherm ore, said method does not nee d any intermediate hardware/ software or change in existing GSM-SMS architecture etc.
