Abstract:

Biodiesel fuel derived from waste cooking oil (WCO) has attracted attention as a promising alternative for petroleum-based diesel fuels to reduce environmental pollution and fossil energy demand. Biodiesel production using immobilized lipase, has attracted considerable attention as an environmentally friendly process. In this work, a superparamagnetic, high surface area substrate for immobilization of lipase was investigated. Immobilization substrates are composed of mesoporous silica/iron oxide magnetic core-shell nanoparticles. Vibrating-sample magnetometer (VSM) showed that, immobilized lipase onto magnetic nanoparticles were nearly superparamagnetic. The main parameters affecting the transesterification reaction using the immobilized lipase, were investigated to find out the optimum reaction condition. The results revealed that, the conversion percent of WCO to fatty acid methyl esters (FAMEs) reached 91% under the optimal conditions, i.e. methanol/oil molar ratio 6:1 with the three-step addition of methanol, enzyme content 25%, solvent content 10%, water content 10%, reaction temperature 35 °C, and reaction duration 35 h. Also, the lipase catalyst could be used for 3 times without significant decrease of the activity.
