Abstract:

This study comparatively analyses the effects of two kinds of orthoses for knee osteoarthritis: the knee orthosis directly worn on the knee and operated by a three-point force and the ankle-foot orthosis stabilizing the frontally inclined tibia vertically. The aim of this study was to compare the effects of knee orthosis and ankle-foot orthosis in knee varus alignment. This was a quasi-experimental study assessing 13 adults. Each subject walked under three conditions: without the orthosis, with the knee orthosis, and with the ankle-foot orthosis. Our study used 3D motion capture system and force plate to evaluate kinematic and kinetic measurement. Data were analyzed using SPSS statistics 18. First, the external eversion moment of the ankle during the stance phase was significantly higher (p < 0.05) when using the ankle-foot orthosis than when not using it. This led to a significant reduction in the adduction moment (p < 0.05). Second, the ankle-foot orthosis and knee orthosis showed no differences in the effect of reducing knee varus angle and adduction moment in patients with knee osteoarthritis. Both the knee orthosis and the ankle-foot orthosis reduced the external knee adduction moment. These findings suggest that a newly applied ankle-foot orthosis, along with the typically used conventional knee orthosis, can increase the diversity of conservative treatments for knee osteoarthritis.
