PERSONAL-SOCIAL GUIDANCE NEEDS FOR IMPROVING REPRESENTATION OF WOMEN IN POLITICAL LEADERSHIP FOR NATIONAL STABILITY: IMPLICATIONS FOR WOMEN EDUCATION

Abstract:

The low participation of women in political leadership and consequently national stability has been a subject of international concern. This study is focused on identifying the personal-social guidance needs of women for participation in politics. The study was carried out in rural and urban areas of Rivers State. Two research questions and one null hypothesis guided the study. It used the Needs Assessment Survey Design. From the population of 2,474,735 Rivers State women aged between 24 and 65 years, a sample of 2,000 was selected through a multi-stage sampling technique. The instrument used for data collection was researchers designed questionnaire with twenty (20) item statements that used a 4 point response scale of Strongly Agree (SA) 4 point, Agreed (A) 3 point, Disagreed (D) 2 point, and Strongly Disagreed (SD) 1 point. It was face validated by three experts in psychology, measurement and evaluation in University of Nigeria Nsukka. It has a reliability index of 0.94 (Cronbach Alpha). Data were analyzed using mean and standard deviation statistics, while t-test statistics was used to test the hypothesis at 0.05 level of significance. Results show that Rivers State women have several persona social guidance needs and there was a significant difference between the needs of rural and urban women. It was recommended that counselors should organize workshops and group counseling for women intending to participate in politics to enable them meet their personal-social guidance needs among others. The implications of the study for women education were also discussed.
