Abstract:

The paper pursues an opinion on the issues and challenges facing mass communication research. With the aid of relational database theory, identified these issues as multiple and divergent audiences, objective purpose and nature of research issue, appropriate technical and relational methodologies, and verification and organization of data among others. The theory is developed or built around the concept of relation, which on its part is a set of mathematical operators that operate on relationships and tend to explain the relationship or influence existing between each other and the results they produce. While the challenges of mass communication research further include time limitation, funding, social influence, constructing standardized questionnaire, and prevalence of biased data, these issues and challenges exist because mass communication research focuses on existing social issue rather than their emergence. As a result of the challenges identified by this paper, the several recommendations were made.
